Best Coffee Beans for V60: A Guide to Choosing and Brewing

The V60 is one of the most popular ways to brew specialty coffee at home. Its cone shape and spiral ribs let water flow quickly and evenly, which produces a clean, bright cup that shows off the character of the beans. That is why the beans you choose matter so much.

What makes good V60 coffee beans?

Pour-over brewing highlights clarity and flavour detail, so look for:

  • Specialty grade beans with clear cup notes, rather than dark, generic roasts.
  • Light to medium roasts, which keep fruit, floral and sweet flavours that a V60 brings out well.
  • A processing method that matches your taste: washed coffees taste clean and bright, natural coffees are fruity and sweet, and anaerobic or infused coffees are bold and unusual.
  • Whole beans ground just before brewing, for the most aroma.

A simple V60 recipe

  • Coffee: 15 g, ground medium-fine (like table salt)
  • Water: 250 g at 92–96°C
  • Ratio: about 1:16
  • Total brew time: 2:30–3:30 minutes
  1. Place a paper filter in the V60 and rinse it with hot water. Discard the rinse water.
  2. Add the ground coffee and level the bed.
  3. Bloom: pour about 30–40 g of water to wet all the grounds and wait 30–45 seconds.
  4. Pour the rest of the water slowly in circles, in two or three stages, until you reach 250 g.
  5. Let it drain fully, give it a gentle swirl, and enjoy.

Quick troubleshooting

  • Sour or thin? Grind a little finer or use slightly hotter water.
  • Bitter or dry? Grind a little coarser or pour a bit faster.
